Text on back of card: Of the 40 small islands dotting the Breiðafjörður Bay, Flatey is the largest and the only one with a permanent settlement. Inhabited since Viking times, Flatey over time became a center for commerce and fishing, flourishing in the early part of the 20th century when over 200 people lived on the island. Only two working farms operate today but the village’s houses are well preserved as summer retreats by their owners. Bird life is abundant on the island supporting species like Puffins, Eider Decks, Black Guillemots, Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Oystercatchers, Arctic Terns and Ringed Plovers.
