Text on back of card: Jökulsárlón - the glacier lagoon formed when Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, began its retreat from the shore of south Iceland around 1950. Presently, the lagoon is about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 miles) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq miles). At its deepest, the lake is approximately 200 meters (660 ft). Breaking off the glacial tongue, myriads of different shapes and sizes of icebergs fill the lake. The color of the icebergs varies due to conditions of light and ice crystals. Wildlife at the lagoon can be abundent as fish such as capelin, salmon, trout and herring flow into the lagoon from the sea and are fed upon by harbour seals and many species of birds.
